Dr. Ophelia Garmon-Brown is a physician and senior executive with Novant Health. She is also a minister, a community health advocate and a visionary for a better future for all.

Dr. Garmon-Brown has lived a life of purpose and service to others.

In this first episode of the Seeking the Heart podcast, Ophelia offers insights and guidance on how we can create a better system of care for all in our region.

She describes how her current passions are helping to improve community health for all, including:

· Serving on the North Carolina Institute of Medicine’s 2030 Task Force;

· Partnering with Dr. Alisahah Cole with Atrium Health and leaders from Mecklenburg County Public Health to establish the groundbreaking ONE Charlotte Health Alliance;

· Helping to bring Upstream, a movement which supports intentionality of pregnancy for women, to North Carolina; and

· Leaving what she sees as one of her greatest lasting legacies by co-chairing the task force that created Leading On Opportunity, a group committed to improving life opportunities and upward mobility for every child.

In our podcast conversation, Dr. Garmon-Brown opens up about her life experiences and reflects on what she has learned about herself through her recent health challenges. She talks about some of the people that are making bold moves to improve our community, including Michael Marsicano and Brian Collier with Foundation For The Carolinas, Carrie Cook with the Greenlight Fund, and Munro Richardson with Read Charlotte. She shares her admiration for programs like Parent-Child Plus and Care Ring’s own Nurse-Family Partnership, early childhood interventions that are lifting up and supporting growing families across the region.

Ophelia believes that working together we can envision and establish a better system of care for all. We have to “be in conversation with each other” as Bryan Stevenson has written, becoming advocates for each other and supporters of a better future for all.
