Care Ring hosts COVID-19 vaccine clinic to increase vaccine access to underserved
On Friday, April 16, 2021, Care Ring, in collaboration and partnership with Mecklenburg County Health Department and the Children & Family Services Center (CFSC), hosted a COVID-19 vaccine clinic to try to reach more individuals in underserved communities, and to reduce racial disparities in vaccination rates.
As of April 7th, 24.5% of the COVID-19 vaccines that had been administered in Mecklenburg County had been given to African-Americans, even though they make up 34% of the population. 8% of vaccines have been administered to the Latinx/Hispanic community, even though they are 14% of the population. The clinic was for clients and their immediate family members who are served not only by Care Ring, but the other nonprofit agencies who are housed inside CFSC as well, such as Safe Alliance, RAIN, and Community Link. In addition, the employees who work for the agencies located at CFSC, and their immediate family members, were invited to get a vaccine. Any appointments not filled by the afternoon prior to the clinic were then released to the public.
The clinic was held at CFSC, which has free parking and is located along the CATS bus line and close to the LINX 7th Street stop. The Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine was administered, with the second follow-up dose to be administered on May 7th. Patients will be seen at the same time as their first appointment.
We are thankful that WSOC-TV's Damany Lewis provided media coverage of the event, interviewing our Executive Director, Tchernavia Montgomery, as well as one of Care Ring's employees, Nurse Case Manager Tracy Scherer, who received a vaccine along with some of her family members. WATCH THE STORY.
